Vermont Furniture Works was established in the spring of 1993. Since then it has grown into an energetic company, dedicated to quality, service and hard work.
Our team oriented philosophy encourages each member to participate in many of the daily decisions which guide Vermont Furniture Works.
There were no clear indications that the young Vermont boy watching his father craft beautiful interior cabinetry was learning a love and appreciation for exquisite workmanship and the connection that is made between the cabinetmaker and his customer. But the seeds were being planted. While he admired his fathers skill and precision, both he and his father had dreams of an education that would hone skills and talents that could be marketed in a larger world than Rutland Vermont offered in the 1950’s.
From the early beginnings of a child “helping”in the workshop to the maturing teenager who worked side by side with his father in assisting with delivery and installation of the completed projects this was intended and became the stepping stone to the University of Vermont and an earned degree in Electrical Engineering. After fulfillment of a Peace Corps assignment in Africa, it was on to a graduate degree in Mechanical Engineering and a professional life with a number of America’s large corporations, each move and promotion, while challenging and rewarding in many ways rekindled the memory of the satisfaction and personal connection of a smaller business.
While still in the corporate world but back home in Vermont the circumstance became available to purchase a partnership in a small fledgling furniture business. Here was the opportunity to be connected to the process from the creation of the design to the building of the furniture to the delivery, to apply his highly developed management skills in a smaller and more personal endeavor. From that moment, Vermont Furniture Works was born and while the journey has been challenging from the vagaries of economic conditions, to the assumption of sole ownership of the business, the creative and personal experience that was missing in a large corporate endeavor has been present in abundance in Vermont Furniture Works.
The large number of customers who became repeat customers, and in the process became friends. The pleasure of placing furniture in homes that the owners have met the craftsperson, shaken the hand of the man or woman who built this bed, or chest of drawers, or table that would be enjoyed by all their family far into the future is a unique experience in this, the early part of the 21st century.
What we create is as honest and substantial as Vermont itself. Solid wood, no wood byproducts, beautifully cut dovetails, hand turned posts, stained and finished to accentuate the beauty of wood from our own northern forests. I know I speak for all of us here at Vermont Furniture works from the showroom to the cabinet shop that in addition to the pride in the integrity of our products we treasure the relationships with our clients and look forward to the many new clients who will enrich our lives.”
